Teru's Trash Talk

World Toilet Day Sympathy and concern for the Toilet-less: World Toilet Day is no joke for the billions of people without sanitation. The World Toilet Organization declared its founding day on November 19, 2001 as World Toilet Day, which is now recognized annually worldwide. This year, the United Nations General Assembly has officially designated November 19th as World Toilet Day.

Teru Talk harps incessantly on what we need to do instead of waste destruction and disposal. When you are aware of how much crud is actually being flushed down-hole and tossed to landfills, the idea of "waste" becomes "wasted resource". Those that have flush toilets also must have water, and because of this, sewage is rightly measured in gallons, not pounds: anywhere from 10 to 20 gallons each in schools to well over 400 gallons per person per day in hospitals. When the good folks of a metropolis like LA constantly feed their Trash Tsunami to the tune of 40,000 tons plus per day just of garbage, our real problem becomes keeping up, not picking up. Just what do we plan to do with all that stuff, anyway?

That's much different than what would happen if there wasn't any indoor plumbing, or curbside pick-up. We occasionally see Garbage Man Strikes bandied about by local news, and watch someone else's neighborhood quickly mound high in black plastic trash bags left to slump and smell along the roads. When flash floods happen, we hear tell of sewage over-flows into some river, and cringe at the thought that our tap-water might somehow be contaminated. The UN points out that globally, 2.5 BILLION people "do not have access to a clean and safe toilet." That's one in three people sans loo, with most of the toilet-less folks living in Africa and Asia.

World Toilet Day offers plenty of details about the haves and the have nots in the realm of safe and sane potties. But for us imbedded in the daily struggle to not trash everything, November 19th is a day to regain a bit of global perspective. Recycling doesn't mean much, when your village is struck by dysentery from poo in the drinking water. Gathering enough workers to do business can be a real problem, when there aren't any toilets handy. Sewage gallons per capita won't translate well when there are no "water closets" in town.

Of the one-liners, my favorite quotes Mahatma Gandhi: "Sanitation is more important than independence." Or waste conversion, for that matter. Take a moment to say "thank you" to your toilet tomorrow.

Hey Rube!

If you are around DC, get over to the National Mall and check out the Wood Stove Decathlon organized by the Alliance for Green Heat, with competition wrapping up Tuesday. Along with indoor plumbing, indoor heating ranks pretty high on my list of favorites. The competing wood stove designs go way beyond the norm, with many integrating small-scale bioenergy generation into super-efficient biomass to heat units, and with a whole lotta design class. Very nicely managed, Mr. Ackerly and the Alliance team!
